Item 104 A Javanese tombak with a very robust straight blade having a
distinct ada-ada and with pamor wos wutah; tombak lack the indicators that we
use to classify a keris, so I am not prepared to provide a classification that I
cannot support for this one, however, I am prepared to say that in my opinion it
is Mataram era, pre-1800.
The sarung is of finely worked kayu jati gembol (burl teak), and a display shaft
of kayu sono with tunjung/sopal of black kerbau horn is fitted.
When tombak of this type were in use they were equipped with a shaft that
could be up to 3 or even 4 meters long, however the constraints of ordinary
houses, especially ordinary modern houses, have seen these ultra long shafts
discarded and shorter display shafts fitted in their place.
This is a serious, weapon quality tombak fitted with 20th century display sarung
Blade length 10.75" (273mm) overall length 42" (1065mm) $450
