This is a finely carved North Coast hilt depicting a bearded man
wearing an Islamic taqiyah on his head. It seems probable that he is
supposed to represent one of the Wali Songo, who were the nine
saints who brought Islam to Java. It is somewhere between difficult
and impossible to nominate one of the Wali Songo above another
for the protective role that a keris hilt fulfils, but it seems likely that
perhaps the leader of the Wali Songo, Sunan Ampel, or possibly the
founder of Cirebon, Sunan Gunung Jati might have been chosen as
the guardian here. This is merely speculation, but it is I believe,
reasonable speculation. Estimated age second half 20th century.
With stand.
